![]() The symbolism of them is something that has always meant the world to me and my family. I would say unless you have never been to a zoo or butterfly house you would be extremely disappointed in this insectarium/butterfly house. The third floor has some fish and snails but once again it is hard to tell the point of the exhibits. The highlight of the second floor is the small climbing structure with an iguana. There's no one around to ask so we just basically looked at some empty cages and some cages that had a tarantula hiding. There are a few glass cages that hold some insects but good luck finding them. The insects are on the second and third floor. I live out of town and our zoo has a butterfly house 1,000 times nicer and the whole zoo is free! I paid over $30 to see a few butterflies and some dirty cages with a few tarantulas in them. No teacher controls and no one around from the butterfly house either. There was a school group and all of those kids were trying to touch the butterflies. I don't think there were more than 30 or 40 butterflies total. There is a concrete room that's billed as a butterfly house It's not like any butterfly house I have ever seen. I took my grandchildren aged 3 and 5 today and it was nothing like I was expecting. I have to agree with the other guests who were disappointed in the Insectarium and butterfly pavillion. They made nice accommodations for the little ones with step stools, clever play areas and cute magnifying glasses. I don’t know if it is handicap accessible as it seems to be an old building, but those steps could be an issue for some. There was a small, inviting cafe to buy food and a big room with tables to sit but we did not eat there. It was very educational and informative and the staff seemed happy to be there and interested in their work. The walls were painted nicely with incects and life stages and body parts, etc. All of the displays were neatly marked with a photo and description. The butterfly’s landed on some of us! There is a long flight of steps to 2 floors of great displays of spiders, lizards, etc, etc. A large room plentiful with beautiful foliage, walkways and butterfly’s was a treat. Walked through a nicely merchandised area to be met by friendly staff. Visited today with 2 teenagers, a four year old and an almost 3 year old and we all loved it! The great experience started while parking in the gated lot with a welcoming butterfly mural on the outside wall. ![]() Almost forgot to mention the parking lot next to the building is now fenced in so you have to park on the street and there is very little space available. NOT GOOD! Save your money and go elsewhere. ![]() Oh, by the way, the grand illumination was a bunch of battery operated candles strewn up the stairs. All in all I felt terribly "ripped off" with the $20.00 admittance fee. The third floor was a bit better and there were a couple of attendants up there to tell a little about the insects and reptiles. Yes I know insects hide but this was bad. The displays were filthy and many were empty. After going through that we proceeded to the second floor. The plants are getting pretty bedraggled as well. Kids were running around picking up the few butterflies there were and one girl was wearing one of the butterflies as a nose ornament. The butterfly exhibit had very few butterflies even though there was supposedly a release at noon. We went to the recent " Butterfly Illumination" and I cannot tell you how disappointed I was. You can't spend the whole day here, and the place definitely needs an update, but my children enjoyed the 2 hours we were here. We brought our lunches to save money, but they did have a cafe with over priced food. There is a lunch room located on the first floor. An employee was happy to answer any questions and even took out some of the different reptiles for the children to pet. They had many step stools available for kids to carry around, in order to see into tanks, which was nice. Exhibits here included lots of spiders, scorpions, a snake, a turtle, frogs, stick like bugs, lots of cockroaches. The third floor was a small area with lots of cages/tanks located around the perimeter and the middle of the room. The second floor was closed for renovations. Although many negatives, my kids did enjoy this part. Not too many butterflies are seen flying around. We saw a lot of dead ones laying on the ground. ![]() It was a big room, on the colder side, with lots of plants/trees. The butterfly exhibit was included with our admission,on the 1st floor. We hung our coats in a coatroom hallway, which is big enough to store lunch boxes and strollers, too. The lady at the desk was polite and took our passes. ![]() Main entrance looked like the door to a cafe, not the insectarium. We went on a Sunday, so parking was free. Only street parking is available, no lot. I visited with my husband and children in January of 2020. ![]()
